Reduce your aches & pains with Massage Cupping Therapy!

Massage Cupping Therapy is an alternative therapy that originated in China. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction which helps promote the healing process with blood flow. Massage Cupping has been in practice as far back as A.D. 281 to 341. Proponents also claim the suction helps facilitate the flow of “qi” in the body. Qi is a Chinese word meaning life force. Massage cupping helps balance the yin and yang, or the negative and positive, within the body restoring balance between these two extremes facilitates the body’s resistance to pathogens as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce inflammation or pain. Massage Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed to relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. Most often people use cupping to complement their care for a host of issues and conditions to help the lymphatic system move excess fluids or toxins from your muscles toward your lymphatic nodes, therefore reducing inflammation, removing toxins from the area and replenishes it with new oxygenated blood, bringing back range of motion, preventing injuries, promoting blood circulation and reducing pain. Massage cupping has also been used for reducing cellulite for this these reasons.

Your body to tells a story. Integrate rapid relief in your recovery to get you feeling like yourself again with Massage Cupping.

What To Expect

During a massage cupping treatment, a cup is placed on the skin by being heated or suctioned onto the area of treatment. If using heat, the cup is often heated with fire using alcohol, herbs, or paper that’s placed directly into the cup, the fire source is removed, and the heated cup is placed with the open side directly on your skin. No flame or heat source physically touches the skin or the area being treated whatsoever. The sole purposed of the fire source is to create the suction for the cup. With modern cupping technologies, practitioners have shifted to using rubber pumps to create suction versus more traditional heat methods. We here at Lilly May Massage use both techniques depending on the issue at hand. Both methods have their strengths as the fire element helps soothes and relax the muscles with heat versus the pumping gun gets a deeper more profound suctions for severe stagnation. One method is not better than the other because they both have a high efficacy rate.

When the massage cup is placed on your skin, the air inside the cup cools and creates a vacuum, or is pumped, that draws the skin and muscle upward into the cup. Your skin may start to discolor and turn red as the blood vessels respond to the change in pressure. At no time during the session should you feel pain, this treatment is not meant to hurt, you should only feel pressure from the suction. With dry cupping, the cup is set in place for a set time, usually between 5 and 10 minutes. After the cups are removed, a light lymphatic massage will be performed to help the body dispose of the stagnant blood and waste for a faster recovery process. Any mild bruising or other marks usually go away within 10-14 days post the session. You should feel 10% - 20% better after just one session.
